View Full Version : Neptunes used in Speed Diving Contests

There is a comment in a thread on dz.com that Neptunes are not used in Speed Diving contests. I don't see any technical reasons why Neptunes wouldn't be used in Speed Diving contests.

Can anyone give examples to refute this?

This is an interesting point. I think I may know at least part of the reason why...

Last year, I worked with Luigi Cani on a project to break the vertical speed record. We were supplied with eight "red" Pro-Tracks. The "red"/special/"calibrated" version is the "official" version recognized by the body that is recognized by Guinness (the publication/recording body - not the beer - the beer actually prefers the more accurate and stylish Neptune as it's beer proof - as proven in several independant tests).

You cannot imagine my frustration as we did jump after jump unable to make the Pro-Track instruments agree with one another. Among others, one of the requirements for an official record is agreement within a rather small tolerance between two different ProTracks. We started out simple and couldn't get two to agree no matter where we placed them. We eventually put instruments all over his jumpsuit, obliterating the record jump-after-jump until we recorded a jump with two instruments within tolerance. This was certainly not his fastest jump but is now the "official" world record.

Two Neptune altimeters (stock-off-the-shelf, with identical firmware versions, and fresh Duracells) recorded within tolerance with much more granular data both altimeters showing usable data that even allowed me to calculate theoretical maximum speed (he was still accelerating at stop altitude!). The data from the Pro Track was all over the place!

This "official" recognition by Speed skydivings governing body may be the cause of your frustrations.

As an additional note - they refused to even look at the Neptune data.:brick:

I hit the same brick walls when I tried to suggest GPS :(

There are a couple of World Boxing Associations as well as a couple of Miss World Associations, so why don't we set up our own? Speed Skydiving Association, not Miss World Association, of course!

I'll bet they change their tune when they want intercompatibility with Titan (II)...
