If you look at the back of your Neptune you will see a hole, and inside the hole is a cavity. The size and shape of this cavity is designed to produce a high intensity sound. The cavity resonates at a particular frequency.
What this means is that

the sound is directional, and
any change to the chamber, including blocking or restricting the exit hole will dramatically reduce the sound level. If you are having any trouble hearing your Neptune's alarms we suggest:

Remove the Neptune from your helmet and use the alarm demo to see how loud it is (MENU>SYSTEM>MODES>DEMO DEMO ALARMS). The sound should be very loud and clear. Notice how covering the hole or turning the Neptune away from you changes the sound level. If the sound is scratchy that is an indication that you are near the end of the battery life.
Make sure the sound exit hole in the Neptune is lined up with your ear, the hole should not be covered, or facing away from your ear.
